PONTEFRACT GREYHOUND STADIUM

This site is not an official website for the track shown here and is neither approved or endorsed by the stadium. I am indebted to Richard English for helping to construct this page.

The Yorkshire town of Pontefract, more famous for its Pontefract cakes and racecourse, also had a greyhound track which was situated at 1° 17' W 53° 41' N and first held races in 1938. The track was located at Willow Park, Knottingley on land owned by Carters Brewery. By early January 1964 the brewery sold the land and this was the beginning of the end for the greyhound track.

Amazingly it operated for a further 5 years before closing on 28th June 1969. The land on which the former greyhound track once stood is now covered by a housing estate.

I am grateful to Jon Seddon for the following link to a map showing the whereabouts of the old track

This section gives a comprehensive picture of the badges produced by the track throughout the ages, but only provides the briefest of glimpses of its history. For those wishing to undertake further research we can recommend a visit to
